[Gay bars and more]

This weekend was really exciting. We did lots of things and we're now like dead tired. Yesterday, we went to City Hall in the morning. This is where the Nobel prize is given out every year. The 3 of us were so in awe with just the magnificence of the building that we took half an hour snapping photos. GH and XL didn't want to go into the Nobel Hall which was a pity, cos they'd have been mesmerized by the golden rooms inside. After that, we went to Gamla Stan for the umpteenth time (ok it was only my 2nd time but they've been there plenty). Since we went to City Hall earlier, we decided to see who have been the deserving winners at the Nobel Museum. GH and I were full of respect for Albert Einstein after we walked through the exhibition. He was a great man – a solitary scientist but a social administrator. (Ok I didn't think that up myself...it was a line from the footage they had about him...) After that, we walked n walked along the quaint old streets, not really having any aim. We entered plenty more souvenir shops but found nothing that we really wanted to buy...and anyway we've already bought enough. There was a little crystal shop that had nice jewellery but unfortunately the ring sizes were either too big or too small for me. We walked towards Storkyrkan (Stor Church) till I finally found the gay cafe I had been to the last time I was here, Chokladkappen (chocolate cup). The girls wanted to have a drink but XL wanted to go to Roberts' Coffee near our hostel instead. So we walked around some more, going into a couple of churches which had really majestic interiors, looking stupid posing in front of a Swedish phone booth (we had fellow Auzzie tourists watching us…but they decided it was a pretty good idea afterall then they took our lead), and tiring ourselves out till we decided to head home around 4. It was a pretty short day. Sthlm is kinda boring if u're not into museums and shopping (the main activities around winter since the lakes are too frozen to take boat rides and it's too cold to go to the park). We were exhausted after all the walking that we had to take a nap before dinner. After dinner, I tried to use the net...stting on the window sill freezing my butt off. But not many ppl were online (4am in sg) so GH came to my room and we hung out for awhile. She's really good company to be with. I think the reason we get along so well is that we're both very accommodating people. She had to put up with my gaga-ing over my dear eye candy. Well I guess that's the price she has to pay for me being her tour guide. Haha.

On Sunday we set out early since we couldn't sleep much anyway. I for one have been thinking so much about my eye-candy till I couldn't sleep (the reason why I went online was to check eye-candy's email reply but I figured I'd receive it only on Monday since it's a work email address...dang...the Swedes make sure they don't do anything related to work on weekends...not even email...sobs...patience girl patience...). When I did finally sleep around 4 am, I was woken up by an sms from mama saying "Happy birthday to me". She didn't even give me a chance...it was 6 am here, she should've waited a couple of hours more then I'd have messaged her on my own :P

Anyway, GH and I set off to Junibacken after breakfast. Any of u heard of Astrid Lingren's children's stories? Does Pippi Longstocking ring a bell? Funny enough none of us really know her stories but MH was saying that he actually grew up reading her stories. The place was amazing. There were loads of kids having fun there, adults too. The tram ride was so amusing. It was like a 3D story telling session...we were even hovering over the displays that it was as if we were flying over them. I must say that although museums ain't really my thing, the presentation in many of the museums here are very unique. After leaving fantasy land, we headed to Gamla Stan (yes...again...) to see the change of guards ceremony. We thought we were early but when we arrived, the soldiers were already stamping their feet. There was a lot of excitement going on and we bumped into Winston and found out that the crown princess Victoria would be there today. Lucky us! After some marching and some drumming, the princess came out to greet us. We were half expecting her to appear in a gown and a tiara or something but she came out in an overcoat over a blouse n skirt and knee high boots. She was very friendly - after the guards presented her with flowers, she came off the pedestal to say hi to us. I felt like a paparazzi in action, snapping photo after photo of her. Well, it isn't everyday we get to see princesses do we? She kept thanking the crowd for coming to see her. Nice lady. Very cheerful. We watched the rest of the ceremony after that. I think this is like the 4th time in total I've watched it but I always seemed to be fascinated anyway. Too bad we didn't get any Dancing Queen from the band this time, but the drum performance was impressive.

We headed to Chokladkappen after that. At first, I was disappointed that it was crowded (wanted to see the pretty boys inside lol) cos we had to go to the cafe next door. Then after hanging awhile inside, we were wondering whether the two shops were connected cos the waiters next door kept coming in and out of our place. GH had yummy choc cake with mochacinno and I had yummy apple pie with vanilla sauce and hot chocolate. We definitely didn't need lunch after that heavy meal. The dessert was so filling that we had no space left for the drink...which was in a HUGE cup (almost like a bowl!). We noticed that in this shop most of the customers were ladies. Only as we were leaving I read the poster on the wall which said this was Chokladkappen's "sister" bar, so I assumed here's where the lesbians hang. Interesting. GH and I wanna go back there again. I told her I'll flirt around...and she was like...hey...as long as someone doesn't come along to flirt with me. Lol.

We had a failed attempt at trying to get onto the winter cruise ferry so we walked around Norralmstorg instead. The music museum was nearby and since it was free (which is rare...and since we've had enough of paying for museums which we don't really care about), we went in to check it out. Turned out to be a pretty interesting place. We had a little adventure after that. We wanted to go to the suburbs to try a restaurant we saw in a guide book. We didn't really know where we were heading. We got down at a deserted bus stop, thankfully there were a couple of ppl around but all they could help us in was telling us that we should take a bus from the opp side of the road. When the first bus came, the bus driver said we could hop on and he'd show us where we could change to another bus. But while waiting at the second bus stop, we checked the time-table. First of all, 71 wasn't on the list, and the other bus 804 didn't operate on Sundays (boy are we lucky living in sg...where we have bus services everyday!) Bus 414 was gonna arrive at 19:21 and it was only 18:00 so we decided that we should not freeze ourselves and headed home.

We'll be starting a new module on Monday. I shall get back to imagining what my eye-candy will reply me tomorrow. And perhaps getting the rest that I need. Good night.

[Dangerous candies]

My sister n I have cooked up a new term…eye candy. Definition: Someone whom u don’t really have a crush on, but pleasing to look at, just for the sake of it. I wasn’t really looking out for one, but there was someone in my class whom I kept looking at to pass by the boring lecture hours. The person is from a different state (Umea) and is really friendly (for a Swedish haha) and of course…cute :P Why dangerous? Cos now that the module is over and the person’s returned home, I’m still gaga-ing. Dang. And the possibility of us meeting ever again is probably 0..which makes it even worse. Help.

P.S. far, read between the lines ;)

[Finally some air]

Advanced Epi is finally over. It was a tough two wks...and on Friday after our presentations, we made sure we rewarded ourselves for the tremendous effort we put in. We went to Kista for dinner..It was good we went there cos there was Halal food in the food court. Been feeling guilty eating a beef/chicken burger from BK/Macs now n then hehe. Unfortunately we were too tired staying up the previous night (writing up our final project reports) so we window shopped only for awhile then went home. And the only thing that was on our minds when we got home was SLEEP!

Saturday was more exciting. We slept in till like 10 plus (yesss finally...) then headed to djurgården on the ferry. It was different cos I've never taken the ferry in winter...and it was fun seeing my friends getting so suaku over the view haha. I dropped my faithful followers at Vasa museum (since I've already been there) and headed to the Biological Museum. It was quite nice..the setting..not like the usual one animal in one display case setting u usually get. It was more like...hmm..how shall I put it...walking around a whole 'wildlife habitat' enclosed by glass case. Ok well I dunno if that description helped..but nevertheless..I was getting a headache trying to decipher which animal on my guide matched which one in the case. And I gave up cos I never seemed to find the right one...And just as I gave up..I saw another person...who had the next page opened instead (duh I shld've flipped it over). But it wasn't much help either way cos I wouldn't have been able to differentiate a red breasted merganser from a guillemot or a greenshank anyway. I took like half an hour there and was very early in meeting the rest. (I should've gone to Vasa again I guess cos this was quite disappointing..)

I decided to venture out into the snow..it was snowing really heavily...like lots n lots n lots of snow falling...that u couldn't see the visibility abt 100m ahead. I got into a coffee house cos my fingers were about to get numb..while I was trying to coax my digicam into life again..to no avail.. sigh.. After thawing a bit, I headed back to Vasa. The snow was falling even more now..and I made a stupid choice of taking the shortcut thru the field of snow cos the snow was coming up to my calf level. Was glad I survived that...vowed never to take a shortcut through thick snow again..haha. Waited awhile for the rest then we took a bus to town...had BK for lunch...walked around the shops a bit then went home. My fave Peru (I think) band was actually still there basking...and I finally bought their CD (after 2 yrs of thinking abt it..hmm...). The rest went to IKEA..I was tired and I've already been there so I followed Winston to a guitar shop which turned out to be closed. Darn it..the shops here close too early on weekends...

On Sunday, I finally met up with Ayisha. It was sooo nice.... wow...never wld've thought we'd meet again. Leyla is as adorable as ever. And she can talk now..heh...was learning a bit of Swedish from her (the last time all she could say was titta=look haha). Adam..her little bro) was adorable too..but I think I forgot that a 3 mth old is only capable of drinking milk, puking, and sleeping..so I turned my attention to Leyla instead. Ayisha fed me really well...cream salmon soup, toast with cheese. As if I wasn't full enough, there was freshly baked bread for dessert. I didn't need dinner that day.

We were quite bored that night. We gathered in the tv room. All 10 of us. (The other tv room had our new not-so-friendly ang-moh neighbours so we decided to label this OUR room..haha..we got the better tv..which has a remote..unlike the other grandfather set...). I had more dessert..yum yum..which Benita made. I don't really follow X-Men so I didn't really know what was going on in the movie..so I went to sleep at 11. Yeah so here I am. This new module doesn't look too bad. I'm wondering what I should do now..don't feel like going home so early..but it's too late to go sight-seeing. Ok lah, shall pack my bag now. See ya.

[10 things I hate about this hostel (in random order except #1)]

1. No internet!

2. No attached toilet.

3. Only two locked bathrooms between 15 people...the rest have only shower curtains.

4. The walls are so thin you can hear what’s going on 5 rooms away.

5. The washing machine is extremely noisy that it shatters the peace of the place.

6. The heater just broke down in my room (too).

7. It’s 45 minutes away from school on a good traffic day.

8. We don’t have designated storage spaces in the kitchen.

9. We’re one floor above basement where the garbage goes…so the lobby doesn’t smell very pleasant.

10. They shut off the corridor lights around 9pm everyday to save electricity but leave it on throughout the day.

Wow and I thought I wouldn’t be able to reach #10.

But on the other hand, at least I fulfilled my intention of returning to Sweden. And I got to meet up with my Swedish friends (ok well only 2 so far...hopefully more to come). So overall, I shall be happy. Wee I'm enjoying myself. I think I've been doing to much of meta-analysis. I'm even analysis the weight of my feelings too now...

Phew lucky satanism ain't my top three :P

You scored as Islam. Your beliefs are most similar to those of Islam. Do more research on Islam and possibly consider taking the shahadah and officially becoming a Muslim, if you aren't already.

Despite the actions of some - who go against the teachings of Islam - Islam is a religion of peace; the word "islam" means "peace through submission to God." "Muslim" means "one who submits to God." Islam is the third of the three Abrahamic faiths, and it shares much with Judaism in Christianity; its differences are the acceptance of Muhammad as the last and final prophet, and the oneness of God - in other words, that Jesus, though he was a revered prophet, was not in fact God, and only one God exists. Apparently the Taliban could not read (though their name means "students"), because the Qur'an states that men and women are equal as believers, and that all believers should be educated and seek knowledge. Modesty in dress and behavior is required in Islam for both men and women to preserve the values of society and move the emphasis from superificial appearance to intelligence, knowledge, and God.

[snow snow n more snow]

ok i finally have some time to sit down and blog properly. nothing much has happened actually..at least nothing much worth blogging. i'm sitting at the same place as i was 2 years ago, using the internet (diff: now i have wireless...and i have 2 other sg classmates as despo for internet as i am). the exam didnt go too bad. actually i can't be bothered to check the answers even tho we were given the answer key. oh well. it's snowing!

there's pros and cons of coming here in a group. as i have mentioned earlier, i'm pretty much of a loner. it was easier doing groceries and going to school alone. dun have to worry who's sharing what food (esp since i dun eat the non halal stuff), and u dun have to worry abt cooking for others (how many ppl to cook for), and what time u leave for school (u dun have ppl hovering around ur door every morning waiting for u to get ready and then telling u u're late, even tho u end up arriving in school 45 mins early). and u dun have ppl being rude to u and not apologising for it. but i guess i should appreciate the fact that i won't go crazy even without being connected to the world cos there's always someone to hang around with when u're dead bored.

weekend's here. should be going sight-seeing tmr. should be fun. will be going to ismael's place for dinner after that. yay. i've uploaded some pics...can get them here. i have so many webshots accounts now its hard to keep track. good thing i have my blog. anyone knows where i can upload fotos limitlessly? without having to pay? here's one of me looking very puffed up...

[This Be the Verse]

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

[You can't walk no line]

I went to the movies with Sakura yesterday. I seem to be watching a lot of movies lately... sg needs a new form of entertainment. Besides movies movies movies. Anyway Walk The Line was a fantastic movie..glad I convinced her to watch that instead of I Not Stupid Too (I didn't watch the first one, so I wasn't really enthusiastic about watching the sequel). I was pretty impressed that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did their own singing, which sounded really good.

After the movie, we didn't know what to do. So after hunting around for a toilet, we went to LJS to eat but there were no seats. Didn't realise the Chingay festival was going on so the roads were blocked off and we couldn't get to the other side. The spectators seemed to be pretty dead. There was hardly any response when the DJs were prodding them on. We saw a few floats which were quite creative, but other than that, I dun really know what the fuss is about. (ok I admit I wanted to watch the show, but after checking it out yest I think I change my mind heh)

We attempted to do a bit of shopping but the prices depressed me so we went to Shaw to eat. Went to Far East to do a bit more shopping...tho we didn't really get anything in the end. It was pretty dead, most of the shops closed by 9 (so much for the 24-hr city that Life! was talking about today). We missed our bus so we went into This Fashion for a few mins then finally headed home. I was particularly awake so I stayed up till 3 chatting and playing games (spider solitaire!). Didn't wake up too late today..ONLY 11..heh...too bad I can't sleep when the sky is bright.

I should resume my packing then. Catch ya later.

[Pink dolphins]

I went to Sentosa with flo last Tues. We decided on Underwater World...to do something different...to spice up the romance lol. Well it was something different than hanging out at shopping centres or catching a movie. It was pretty fun, tho' we weren't really ready for the beach. Beach, we'll come next time!

The dolphin show was exciting. First time I've seen dolphins...well not counting the ones I saw in Australia from a cable car when I was 15. Anyway, here's our Sentosa pics...on the left's a few of my faves. And another of our cycling trip at East Coast with Far n Mel. Well, we don't look like we're cycling...but we were..haha.

[My biceps fool me]

I went to gym early today morning. Woke up at 6.45 am...which is something I don't even do for work. All b'cos my dear trainer said we had a session. So I reach there at 8.10, thinking "oh deak, nik must be waiting for me". but what do i get instead? A sheepish receptionist who tells me he is running late and maybe I should start my warmup first. Okay I said. Ten minutes later, he was still nowhere to be seen. The whole gym was empty except for me and another guy. Alright, I'm not the only loser here at 8am on a Sunday morning. I decided not to wait any longer so I went upstairs to do the usual stuff that I do at training. Doing it on my own was tougher (Nik usually holds the equipment so I don't feel the full weight of it). The worst was the bicep crunch. I put it at level 2 and could hardly lift it. Shifted down to the minimum weight and barely managed a few sets. I guess the biceps Sakura and I see when we flex them to each other (whenever we wanna show that we're STRONG) are really fake ones.

When I reached home, my dear instructor called me to apologise cos he had forgotten(!!) our session. Arghh. Second time this wk he's pissed me off. First was on Tues when he kept attending to a potential customer during my session with him. He kept apologising for his "last minute appt" but I was like..hey I booked u first!! Well, he's prob desperate to get commision from a new client. GH thought I should've been fiercer to him and refuse to accept his apology haha. But I let him go pretty easily after he promised to dis-count this session. I'm not very impressed by the service he's giving. He comes 10 mins late, goes off 5 mins early and can even forget a session! Man, I'm either gonna stop training with him after my 12 sessions or get someone else!

I went to help my father at his shop in the evening. I was so tired from gym (I tend to overdo it when I don't have training..for fear that whatever I do won't have to full impact) that I had to drag myself out of the house to go all the way to Bedok. Had dinner with Sakura who was doing the morning shift then she went home. It was pretty hectic, there were only 2 drink stalls open so we had a lot of customers. I panicked when I had to take a few orders and when dad came back from serving, I immediately went back to my job of preparing cups of ice lol. We went home around 12. Damn exhausting. Dad was so tired (he's been doing full day shifts two days in a row) that he asked me to drive him home..which is a really rare thing cos he thinks he's the only great driver around. Don't have much energy to surf so I think I'll be heading to bed soon. Gd nite.

[Walking Contradiction]

No it's not Green Day's song. It's about me, myself and I. I'm confused by my behaviour sometimes.

On one hand, I love being alone. I prefer going to the gym myself, I like to go shopping alone, I wouldn't mind catching a movie myself, I don't mind travelling on my own if I had to. And on the other hand, I hate going for lunch alone, getting a haircut by myself (don't ask me why), would rather take an alternative route than bump into a friend and hate attending functions alone.

I had a function to attend today..Mendaki Graduates' Tea. The twins told me at the last minute they weren't going to I was wondering whether I should go (it was a "if u go, i'll go" thing). I knew Su was going but I wasn't absolutely sure. Plus she didn't answer her phone so I thought she was busy at work or something. Ironically enough, I was half-hearted but I started ironing my clothes. Was contemplating whether I should go or not till Sakura convinced me that:

Fullerton Hotel + free food = should go.

So I dragged myself there, thinking that if I didn't meet anyone there, I'll just hang out for awhile. And if I bumped into someone there, well duh..tag along. When I reached there, I saw someone I knew but instead of approaching her, I walked away so that she didn't notice me. And then I picked up my phone to call Su again to ask her if she was coming. I bumped into a friend from Crescent whom I haven't seen in ages (well I realised she went to NJ as well but hmmm...kinda slipped my mine..I guess in my mind I categorised her as "Crescent friend"). We talked a while till I realised I shouldn't be anti-social. But by then I didn't have much of a choice cos I was standing practically at the entrance so those who were coming in saw me n Lily and did the usual Hi, long time no see bid.

It was quite fun actually, catching up with friends (and finding out that another quarter of them are in NIE or already teachers). There was a lot of "Hey, where do I know you from??" and two of my friends kept wondering how they knew each other. Lol. Imagine what a 20 yr reunion wld be like. I'll probably only remember faces by then. The entertainment was good - Banghra dance and Malay dance from NJC (woo hoo..NJC is solid!). The "Malay" dancers were like 5/6 Chinese (probably Malaysian ASEAN scholars desperate for CCA points); the girls being Chinese didn't really have the grace of a Malay dancer. The dance was pretty confusing as well - we were wondering whether it was Malay, Chinese (didn't help that they were wearing red costumes during CNY) or something dance but well, it was impressive and they got great applause. We were pretty bored and tired by 4, especially cos it was a standing event...they wanted us to socialise and thought tables would be too formal. Most of us ended up complaining anyway. We only stayed back for the lucky draw, but too bad none of us won. Just as we were about to leave, I remembered I brought my camera...but as we were smiling for the shot, the batt went flat. Bleah. Embarrassing.

The trip home was even better. Su n I wanted to get seats. So we thought we'd take the train from Marina Bay all they way home. Neither of us realised that the train was actually heading to the north-south line...so when I woke up halfway, expecting to see the sky and finding a bright yellow station instead (toa payoh)..I woke Su up and told her how silly we were. Well, it was a good time to chit chat I guess. We finally got down at Clementi like an hour later..but at least we caught up on our sleep!

[Of race and religion]

Before I start...some definitions:

race: A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution.

religion: Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Unfortunately, some people seem to confuse the both. For the upteenth time, someone asked me about my race today. And after some pondering, a couple of hours later, she came back to me and asked why I was wearing a tudung if my dad was indian and mum eurasian. I wasn't surprised actually. In fact, she was being very apologetic cos of the "confusion" but I was like..it's ok..I get that qs a lot. I think they need to improve on social studies lessons in school so ppl get the simple difference. Hmmm.

[I'm Choosy]

Men See You As Choosy

Men notice you light years before you notice them
You take a selective approach to dating, and you can afford to be picky
You aren't looking for a quick flirt - but a memorable encounter
It may take men a while to ask you out, but it's worth the wait

[the things u have to say]

saying so many things
yet keeping mum
the growing crowd
walking hand in hand blissfully
as if owning the world
what goes on inside
i don't know
you could even be me

the cover that shields further
into the centre of the world
till nothing can be identified
by everyone except a few
what's hiding beneath
perhaps a clue or two
they've already been given
but the mystery unresolved

[Le Grande Voyage]

Between culture, religion, and a lot of emotions - I must say this was one of the best European films I've watched so far. Father and son set off in their rattling old car with just a pocketful of money to sustain their trip from France all the way to Mecca so that the father could perform his Haj. I wonder whether people really do that..afterall flying is much easier...and religion is supposed to help you, not burden you. It was a charming road trip movie with a touch of humour and class. The ending was pretty sad but minus the dumbass behind us who kept laughing unnecessarily, it was an enjoyable show.

[a dozen's too many]

The weekend was good. On Friday night, my auntie finally got the treat that she's been asking me for ever since I started working. I was calling and calling Sakura cos we decided to meet at 6 instead at 6.30 that I initally told her. Since she said she was extremely tired I was scared that she was sound asleep so I went home just in case I needed to wake her up. Was taking a risk since I didn't bring my house keys. Luckily my suspicions were right..she was sound asleep despite the dozen missed calls she received. Failed miserably at dragging her out of bed so I went to take a quick shower first. She almost didn't wanna go but thank god she finally got up. By then it was already 6 so we were obviously very late in meeting auntie and jam.

They didn't hesitate in choosing Swen.son's for dinner...my auntie afterall was on a mission to make me poor. Haha. Dinner was good and we made it on time for the movie. I didn't watch Cheaper by the Dozen 1 so I really had nothing to compare with..but it was a pretty nice feel-good movie..typical Steve Martin plot..the clueless dad who has to learn to let his children go. I was shocked to receive an sms from flo after the movie...she forgot to bring home her house keys so she actually came down to west mall to get the set that she gave me last time. We did some shopping (cos according to auntie i had to get her a parting gift!) and window shopping...but in the end i only bought jam something. ah and the sports sandals i've wanted for so long. my auntie wasn't done making me poor yet so all of us went to mac's for supper (what a sinful outing...i cld feel my tummy bloating up). We had ice cream and fries...and a whole lot of laughs. Poor jam was clueless cos of our NC-16 jokes lol.

Went to gym on Saturday and had a good workout. My trainer probably realised I could start doing greater weights so things got tougher today. It was pretty draining but at the end of it I actually felt refreshed. Went down to Raffles city to meet GH and XL. We were going winter shopping. They didn't find anything there so we went to Suntec WinterTime and Coldwear to buy some thermals and heat packs. Later on I met up with Kin and her two friends. I was quite exhausted at first having been to gym and walking around Suntec, but after dinner felt a bit better so I stayed on chatting n hanging with them. Her friends turned out to be pretty cool (not that I assumed they weren't..I just wasn't in the mood to meet up and be gay with strangers haha). We shopped and talked and talked and talked till it was like 10 plus. I finally explored the terrace at Esplanade heh. Nice place.

On Sunday, had the usual nagging in the morning abt how I should spend more time at home so that I can cook and clean for the family. So after cooking lunch (and what did i get in return...why didn't u cook fish instead. GRRR), I rushed off to meet flo. I was thinking of getting a lappie so we went to Sim Lim square to look around. Fell in love with a Fujitsu S2110SM which cost $2635. Unfortunately I couldn't get an installment scheme with my debit card so after an embarrassing moment (shall spare u the details) I walked out of the place. Was tempted to use up all my cash but well...I have to keep some for London :P We went to Haig Road after that cos my uncle wanted some suggestions on how to improve business at his new nasi lemak stall. Flo gave some pretty good suggestions and while the two of them were babbling on, I crapped with auntie on the phone. After that, we went to my dad's stall in Bedok (hawker stall visiting day haha) to have dinner. Papa was actually quite friendly with Flo...surprising considering how antisocial he usually is. We went back to Woodlands after that to hang out then I went home at abt 11 plus.

Yeah here I am now, at "work". I came in at 10 cos I couldn't wake up on time. Came to the library to copy some journal articles but they're like ancient issues (1993) so I have to request from the closed stacks...which I can't do cos I don't have a membership card. Oh well. I'm going to Queensway with my colleagues after this for more winter (boots) shopping. So much for work...

[PETA]

Got this from yahoo news today:

"On December 19th last year, a complaint was filed against Neverland Ranch by PETA (People Against Ethical Treatment of Animals) based upon a news report," USDA spokesman Darby Holladay told AFP."

Must be a terrible organisation. Well, I guess it's supposed to be PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: The animal rights organization. Funny.

[Pedal On]

Had a great time at East Coast today. Met up with Far n Mel to go cycling. The bus journey was pretty long..1.5 hrs but it was a good way to take a nap. We had a small breakfast at Mac's (it was almost a must to do breakfast) then armed with sunblock and bottles of water, we headed on our cycling trail. I had trouble keeping up cos my legs were exhausted from yesterday's treadmilling; then again, my stamina hasn't been fantastic. Mel n Far kept stopping ahead waiting for me to appear. *paiseh* We did quite a distance tho and it was a good workout. Finally stopped at a shelter for a water break..which turned into a session of Aha! since Mel brought her cards. It started to rain a bit but luckily it was just one or two drops. We wanted to hang out at Bedok jetty for awhile but unfortunately we had to head back to return the bikes. We had a quick drink at the newly renovated food centre then rushed back to the bike shed. And I just realised that we skipped the dip-your-feet-in-water part. Heh.

We went off to Parkway Parade for lunch. The hotplate chicken noodles I had was yum yum, tho I guiltily realised I probably put back on whatever calories I lost. Tsk tsk. Better not let Nik (my trainer) know. Mel was in a bit of a rush cos she had to attend a recording at TCS. She left ard 2.15 and Far n I stayed back to bitch about life. It was a pretty good bitching session... felt better after that. Sometimes its good to know that someone is going thru the same shit as u. I've met one too many sheltered ppl who don't know how to relate to my ramblings about how crap things are sometimes. We talked n talked for almost an hour I think then walked around the shopping centre and headed home.

Oh yeah, I just remembered I should be tidying my cupboard. But I'm tired. Zzzz...

[Disillusioned]

Just came back from my biostats re-exam today. Feeling disillusioned by the GAME programme more than ever. First of all, I don't think I deserved the horrible grade that big boss gave me. With a "very good" during the test and answering most of the questions correctly, I definitely didn't deserve such a crappy grade. Then today Feng told me that the re-exam marks won't be counted and I'm like wtf. Why did I take it then?? To show him that we have the basic concepts right it seems. What a whole load of shit. If this were in KI, I'm sure the re-exam wld've been taken into account. Was bitching with Feng abt the prog..apparently one guy dropped out cos he was disillusioned way before. And (a close, reliable source told us) our tester apparently judged us even before sitting down to present our answers. "Yeah this one has the potential..this one doesn't". What the hell. All his personal invites and docs made it (even one of them who was struggling with biostats did well cos he "has been working with molecular bio for some time now". hello..it's biostats..nothing to do with that!) It seems that my 2 A's in another 2 modules played no weight at all. Sigh.

I think the first exam was really terrible. Judging a whole module based on one stupid question. It didn't help that the exam was a day after Hari Raya Puasa which meant less mugging. Even my Swedish friend thought it was pretty unfair and that they should cater for minorities. Oh well, this is Singapore. The molecular bio exam was just as crappy; imagine being assessed on the entire module with just ONE presentation. Some of us had 1, some had 2, some had 3 examiners cos they kept going in and out of the lecture theatre. And Mr S kept asking questions only related to his field. In the end, they even asked us for our slides so that they could grade us. Really really unfair. There should be a less subjective way of assessing us. Sigh. Guess the only way is to get into the examiners' good books.

Or I suppose the other way is to do really well for the next coursework and prove to big boss that I deserve to be in the programme. If things don't go as planned...well..as much as I had to say it, I might drop out as well. Let's see what God has in store for me.

On a better note, now that I'm on the way to becoming a full time staff, my trip to Sweden will be paid for. And yeah, I'll be leaving on the 10th of Feb, but I'll only be away for 2 mths. Will be taking the last week of March off to do a bit of travelling in London/Cambridge. Hee. Looking forward to that!

Alright, my stomach's growling. It's lunch time. Gotta go!

[Why Plan?]

Why make plans? Why make resolutions? Most of the time they don't work out anyway. One of my friends was saying today that she took the whole of Jan last year thinking of what resolution to make...and she never did. And it's probably gonna be the same this time round.

I planned to have a future with Y but we broke up. Now I'm not even looking at guys.

I planned to do my postgrad overseas and here I am stuck in sg.

I planned to save a ton when I started working and now I can barely maintain 2 bank accounts.

So much for planning. I plan to do well in everything this year. Let's see how that one goes.

[Last Nite was a Daze]

i might have overdosed myself last nite. fell asleep almost immediately after taking my meds. went to see another doc n he said i've got bronchitis. wtf. i wanna get better soon. breathe again. i was talking to myself in my sleep last night. half awake half asleep..i remember pointing to my cup and saying out loud "i think there's no more water in it". feeling slightly better now..at least i haven't used up a whole box of tissues yet.

tv sucks. nothin good is on. i've resorted to watching nickelodeon. not bad tho, they had some awards going on, there was alyssa milano, simon cowell and halle berry (who knocked into the mike..lolz). it's lunch time n i'm hungry. but there's nothing to eat. mum's away, sakura's not at home and i don't wanna cook cos i wanna be sick n resting. bro kept calling at ard 5.30 this morning but i wasn't bothered to pick up the phone. dad rushed to bring him to see a doc this morn. wonder what he's up to. dad never rushes to bring me to the doc - he just nags me for not taking my puff. the forgotten middle child as my trainer put it. sobs.

shall occupy myself with some games now. in case i forget, happy new year.

[Eve of New Year's Eve]

haven't blogged for some time. been busy getting sick n staying sick. first i got a really bad attack in bkk, then i was over-enthusiastic abt starting my training regime so i went to the gym even tho i was feeling crap. it was fun..my trainer's a boyish cute guy who's too short for me lol.

there's been a lot of hype abt x'mas n new yr. met up with a german guy who thinks that singaporeans dunno how to celebrate the true meaning of x'mas. it seems that orchard rd is more of a crazy bazaar area than anything. it was nice getting a different perspective of what x'mas is abt. well as for me, i spent the x'mas hols at home. had food poisoning the day before - was so busy puking that i had no energy to go home so i spent the nite at flo's place. was mighty embarrassed cos i was feeling so woozy that i was behaving like a 5 yr old...or perhaps like a drunk. i kept her awake half the nite cos of my coughing. thanks sweetie for looking after me. *muak* cldn't bring sakura ice skating on sun (which was one of her worries when i told her i was sick..bleah..). flo came over on mon to cheer me up..i was bored like crap all alone at home. in the evening saki, flo n me went to the chevrons in jurong for bowling. was pretty fun except that my slipper (or rather sakura's :P) broke when i slipped on the way home. i guess that's what u get for $4 thai slippers.

[PrincessSaf on Ice]

ain't a very graceful sight. but i enjoyed myself anyway. sakura n i stood outside the skating rink at JEC for like half an hour - being both amazed at the prodigies and laughing at the not so graceful skaters (tsk tsk..ok that didn't sound so nice...). i was prompting sakura to get into the rink instead of just watching. but i was as nervous abt entering cos i haven't skated in ages. not that i used to skate a lot...just once in jc. i couldn't even walk on the ground with my skates, much less stand on the ice. so the first few rounds were spent gripping onto the handrails for life. both of us were like "no we don't wanna fall". and since they cordoned of one area for skating lessons, and since we were too scared to skate away from the handrails, we kept u-turning back and forth. sakura was pretty good...i had to beg her for a break halfway. i didn't tie my skates properly so my feet were aching. second round was pretty good. finally time was passing faster..and we even ventured out (further) away from the handrails. and on our last round, we even skated across the rink without any handrails at all. we had a break while they redid the ice. they asked those with hockey-skates to skate around for a few rounds before they did the maintenance. anybody knows why only the hockey skaters were asked to skate for awhile??

there was a 20 min break. good rest for my feet. the skates are really uncomfy. we were pretty tired by then...and the ice was so slippery (i prefered it before they redid the ice!) so we just went a couple of rounds. i managed to slip once..luckily i wasn't too far from the handrails...and the other beginners were nice enough to pull me in before something disastrous happened. our 2 hrs were up so we went off soon after that. what a rip-off..they shouldn't include icing time in the 2 hr rate.

it was a pretty fun outing. and tiring. sakura's sleeping early for the first time in 2 wks. thank god...or else i'll be having trouble sleeping with the lights on till she's finally done at 2.30am! we're gonna go skating again next weekend. anyone wanna join us?

[Speak up Girl, Speak up]

I have so many things to say, but only half the things come out. I think I think in my head too much. And I realise it more when I'm with Sakura, cos we'll be thinking the exact same thing (which sometimes freaks us out) but she'll be the one who vocalises it. Any suggestions on how I can talk more? Even when I'm thinking of what to blog, by the time I come home, I'll be like..nah I don't think they wanna hear it. Hmm...I need a pet cat. Then maybe I can talk to her. I was meeting my prof on Wed. And I had all my answers prepared. But when he asked me something...all that came out was "I don't know". wtf. Speak up girl, speak up. I'm trying.

Anyway, Sakura just got her JC posting. She'll be going to TJC. I'm happy for her; she didn't think she'd get into a good JC (NJ out of the qs cos she thinks it's for nerds..grrr). TJ's like damn far. But I guess it'll give my dad more reason to move to the east. And I'm gonna really hate that since I'll still be in NUS. 1.5 hrs of travelling, morning and evening. Come to think of it, it'll be quite a dumb move, cos she'll be in JC for only 2 yrs, and then it's 4 yrs in NUS. Oh well. If we do move, I'll be tempted to rent an apt in the west. My sis will hate me for it tho. But well... A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

I've just been promoted to a full-time staff. Which is really great. The processing is gonna take long (not too long I hope..or else I can't go to Sweden for free haha). The biggest thing I'm gonna miss is waking up at 8 and going to work at 10. And no more loafing around and "working" from home...like I am now. Tsk tsk..dun tell anyone. ;)

[I Need a Thai Massage!]

Ok that about sums up my Bangkok trip. Haha. The massage was really great...first one was good but the second one was even better. Gotta go back to get another. Yeah. The end.

Well if you want a more comprehensive review of our trip...tune in to Sakura's blog. Enjoy! :)
Oh yeah, the pics from the trip are here

Hey Dr G! /

Met up with one of the profs in my dept today. My first impression of him last wk was like..hey he's so cheerful. And he certainly is. We went for fieldwork today at Temasek Country Club. No, not to play golf. To do medical checkups for workers from SG Pest Assoc, and collect some blood samples at the same time. I noticed from start to end that the smile on Dr G's face was always there. He greeted the workers with a big grin, taking time to note their names and asking them how they were feeling (sincerely, that is). Then even tho his job was just to check BP and height n weight, he bothered to look thru' the questionnaire I administered to see if everything was in order and whether there was anything he should look into during the exam. I was totally impressed by the way he handled it. Even as he brought the workers to the weighing scale, he was like, "If you don't mind, pls take off ur shoes...yes that's it..." and kept giving comments like "wow so u're a tall and thin guy." "good u're fit". What a refreshing change from docs n nurses who go "HEIGHT! WEIGHT!"

I was commenting to Viv on how there was always a big grin on his face whenever he walked pass us. Later on when we were hanging around she told him that (much to my embarrassment) but he replied with a wonderful phrase, "Hey, there's many things in life to be happy about!" (and he added that he's extra happy these days cos he's a new dad...awwww...) Gosh! If only more ppl thought like that (myself included). It's so true, we tend to think of negatives - I have to work OT today, my headache is killing me. But we don't stop to think - hey at least I have a good job, my headache will get better soon.

As if I wasn't impressed enough, towards the end of the day when we had nothing much to do, one of the interns asked him a medical qs (diff b'w nasal congestion and sinuses). Any other doctor would probably have given a one sentence reply..a few lines at the most. He paused to think for a minute, and sat with us for 15 mins explaining us the differences and misconceptions. Awesome! He even went on to ask us why we asked, whether we had it, what our doc was treating us with. Oh if only my GP were as nice as him. He was quite amazed that I worked with one of the developers of some asthma machine (one of my profs in KI)- apparently he can't wait to get his hands on one set himself (there's only one such machine in SG, in NUH). We were talking abt the theory behing the machine and he was in total agreement with me (or rather with tthe Swedish prof) and he sensed my interest till he almost offered me to join in their study. Haha. We'll see :P Unfortunately it was time to get back to lab. Hope I have a good chat with him again soon!

A point in time

There's a point in time
When things you held dear
Make no sense anymore

There's a point in time
When things go so wrong
They're not worth salvaging

There's a point in time
When you realise
That black and white exist together
So will good and bad

There's a point in time
When things go so wrong
And you realise it's just time to say goodbye.

But it still hurts

Another disappointing day at the clinic

No, they didn't make me wait 2 hours this time. In fact the queue was pretty short; I only had to wait 30 mins to see the doc. I was hoping this time they'd do something more effective for my back..cos I'd been waiting to see a specialist for over a month. Had a couple of x-rays done. I was so proud that I remembered to wear non-zipper pants so that I didn't need to take them off in the x-ray gown. But then the technician went like, "Ma'am, I think there's a metal piece somewhere so please take off your pants so that we can do another x-ray". Then I looked at the x-ray and realised that omg..it was a little buckle thingy on my panty (oops I guess u dun really need the details :P). So embarrassing haha. Anyway in the end, the doc said exactly what I was complaining to him about my previous orthopaedic...since my x-rays didn't show anything, he just asked me to go for physiotherapy, and he gave me some pills which I already have from my GP. Bleah! I hope they don't make me do those silly exercises like before, cos obviously they didn't work.

Maybe I'll just stick to acupuncture. Yep it does work. Was a bit skeptical at first but it was really effective; the numbness in my leg was gone after the first session. The side effects are minimal..like some ticklish feeling and err apparently some feel-good hormones (endorphins) are produced so u'll feel happy after the treatment. I think I scared Flo a bit after the first session cos I was unusually giggly (coupled with the fact that I was happy the pain was gone).

Ok Sakura is bugging me cos her O-levels are done and it's time for her to hog the computer (something I've been doing all this while haha). See ya.

Don't disconnect

I'm terrible on the phone. Some of my friends say I sound as if I can't wait to slam down the phone.

Damn.

I think I just cut my editor off the moment she said bye. Oops!

2 hours for 2 mins

Waited a freakin' 2 hours at the polyclinic today and after the long wait, the doc only saw me for 2 minutes!! Was so pissed that I wanted to leave but my number was abt to be called. I think they have a really unfair system where ppl with fixed consultations are given priority...so much so that there were so many ppl who came much later than me but saw the doc first. GRRR. That was one of the reasons I stopped seeing my doc at NUH. Maybe I should stick to self-medicating. The only queue would be at the pharmacy cashier.

There goes the tarts

Hari Raya came n went. So have the pineapple tarts. Staying home is bad. I make a trip to the kitchen every few minutes to see what I can nibble on...and as of a few minutes ago, I finished the last tart. Not that I was the sole contributor to its disappearance...the layers were going fast. I need more tarts. Anywhere that sells post-Hari Raya tarts?

The Power of Words

One of my favourite poems from primary school..suddenly had the urge to post it.

A careless word may kindle strife
A cruel word may wreck a life

A bitter word may hate instill
A brutal word may smite and kill

A joyous word may lessen stress
A loving word may heal and bless.

Break-ing

Finally got some time to rest. Past week was crazy. Out every night; even on Fri had my dept's D&D to attend. It was pretty good except that the high pitch, 70's sort of Chinese karaoke made my head almost split. And I was pretty disappointed that my friends wore jeans n t-shirt... who wears that to a D&D..at a hotel at that?! Yeah we made up the "small-fry" table but even small fries, i feel, should dress up to the occasion. Realised that my prof is a really friendly guy...he kept coming to our table to see if we were enjoying ourselves. He even found out for me that there was a halal table. Wasn't really eager to go there...so half-way thru' the dinner I grabbed some food on my plate and sneaked back to join my friends.

Went to buy bus tix for Malacca on Sat. Weeeee I'm going to Malacca! Dunno why I'm so excited abt the trip...guess cos it's the first time I'm going with a friend...I smell my freedom closeby... more holidays with friends coming up I hope!
P.S. HPC gang...perhaps we should plan an "adventure" abroad!

My swollen ankles

Been such a busy week for socialising. On Monday, went out with a couple of friends to watch Saving Face. The storyline was pretty predictable..but sweet anyway. Tues wasn't really socialising...went for tuition at 6. By the time I bought dinner at Westmall and reached home, it was already 9.30 and I was exhausted. Plus I got 3 horrible blisters from wearing new canvas shoes without socks. Luckily I borrowed a pair of slippers from the prayer area the moment I reached school. Wouldn't have been able to survive the day if I hadn't.

Yesterday, the 4 of us went to The Ricetable at Suntec to celebrate Mel's belated b'day. I was 25 minutes late...first I missed the bus..then when I was finally at City Hall, I couldn't walk fast cos my feet were stinging and legs were aching. It was a long wait...between trying to make reservations and postponing twice we finally went there. It was a worthwhile wait tho, the food was pretty good..minus the ladies fingers and brinjal dish :P Poor Far..we were bullying her to finish up the extra dishes we ordered. She managed to swallow down one piece of sweet n sour fish so we rewarded her with an otak. Haha. After dinner, we went to a cafe at Liang Seah St to play games...and have dessert. The guy at the place was very friendly and helpful..he helped us choose a few games since we were beginners. It was cool chillin' out with the gang. We played for about 2 hrs then headed home.

Today I went down to Times after school to get the manuscript I have to edit. It was pretty sucky cos it was raining like crazy. Thank God my father drove me there (I almost wanted to borrow the car to go there myself). The rain was so heavy that we could hardly see ahead. And when a pick-up truck zoomed passed us, the water splashed against our windshield till we literally couldn't see anything for a few seconds. And to make things worse, I stepped into a puddle of rainwater cos the drain was overflooded (Mel, u gotta tell them to improve the drainage there haha). The meeting took longer than expected...so I was late in meeting Ruth and Felicia at Far East. Had to walk more...I think my left foot by reflex started putting weight on the side where there was no blister...and cos of that that side hurts like hell now. We walked around Isetan for a bit while waiting for Azi..who unfortunately didn't turn up. Good thing we decided to head to Anatolia for dinner first cos even at the end of dinner, Azi was still at her friend's place for raya. The cute Turkish waiter was there...serving the ice cream...but I didn't wanna get teased so I didn't get any :P We gave Felicia the pink jacket from Iora that she wanted. I bought a size too big so we headed to Wisma to get it exchanged. Ruth wasn't feeling up to it so we left pretty early.

Why the title? Well I was chatting with my cousin...my auntie's painful ankle has gotten worse..it's swollen now. And somehow I started to look at my ankles...and realised they are swollen too. Gosh. I can't even see my ankle bone now. Think I should stay off my feet for awhile. Or perhaps get more supportive shoes. Sakura says I should stop walking till my feet recover. I should get back to icing my ankles now...

Lame joke

My prof said this in stats class today:

Geneticists won't understand the meaning of relative risk of getting a disease because to them it'll mean the risks in relatives getting the disease. L.A.M.E.

Plastic surgery anyone?

I'm happy with my nose eyebrows smile face. Attended an interesting talk today during the Combined Scientific Meeting SG 2005. The topic was so popular that the room was full to the brim. There were pictures after pictures of before and after treatment..and some of the results were amazing. But after seeing the gruesome surgery pics, Lakshmi and I decided that if we ever thought of having a facelift, we should remind each other of the horrible process and bruising after the op. After the talks, I was happy that I did not have "oriental" features..and that I'm pretty satisfied with how I look so hopefully I'd never need surgery. But then again, we decided that a botox injection or two wouldn't do much harm if we needed it in future haha :P

I have to go now. Have a little crisis. Believe it or not Sakura juz "punched" my hair and now its caught in the puncher. I hope it's just the O-levels causing her temporary madness...

Phew, I survived STATA!

The test wasn't that awful today. The first qs was easy but the next one was tricky. We were getting desperate..somehow the data we typed in wasn't in the correct format..and my partner didn't use STATA, and me..well..I'm hopeless at it. In the end he took out his laptop and started calculating the values using the programme he was familiar with instead...desperate measures since we only had about 10 minutes left. What a life saver! He was done in like less than 5 minutes (while we were struggling for more than half an hour with STATA!). The presentation part went well too, I think. I could answer the questions...prof had a hard time digging out the right answers from us (according to XL he always thinks differently..so what we presentated wasn't exactly what he wanted). He kept giving us clues..till I guessed correctly and got a "very good". Haha. Lucky guess! I goofed up the next qs..but that wasn't really fair cos we haven't learnt logistic regression..but of course my partner cld answer (damn that know-it-all haha). Oh well, it's over.

After the test we went for lunch. Were deciding what to do tonight as a farewell dinner for the Swedish students, as well as to celebrate YK's b'day. Which reminds me..I should check my email for the details...

I went to Times Publishing House after that. Had an interview at about 1.30. Gonna be a copy-writer for them for their new Chemistry line of teaching resources which ahem..is supposed to be kept confidential. Bumped into Mel (who introduced the job to me) while I was waiting in the lobby. She was so blur (as usual?? haha) that she didn't notice me waving like an idiot..and her friend had to get her attention for me instead! My interviewer was pretty impressed.. apparently I spotted a few mistakes which people almost always miss out during the copy-writing "test" she gave me. The pay's pretty good too. If everything goes well I'll sign the contract on Monday. Have till end Nov to do the 120-page assignment..which should be fine since my modules are over for now. She asked my why I wanted to do this job and I felt like saying I guess I have my mum's "english teacher" blood in me. Haha.

Went to Fuji (almost typed FIJI!) after that to see if my digicam was ready for collection. I must say their customer service is pretty bad. They were supposed to call me 4 days after I sent it in to tell me the diagnosis. I waited for one wk and had to give them a call instead. They told me I had to wait another wk for the spare part to arrive. And as expected it was more than a wk n they didn't call. I called them again today and the technician cldn't be reached. The person on the line said she'd get him to call me back..and the best part is she didn't even note down my number till I asked her whether she wanted it. Guess I shouldn't complain since they're replacing the CCD for me for free :P

P.S. Is anyone reading my blog? The only comments I seem to get are from spammers..sobs...

Selamat Hari Raya

Hari Raya this year was good. Not much annoyances, and things went smoothly. The briyani was as delicious as ever..yum yum. Auntie came over the night before to help us cook, since we don't have a maid anymore..so mum needed some moral support. It was a big day for auntie...the first time she ever cooked for Hari Raya (she's gonna strangle me for divulging such information :P). Her ayam masak merah ("chicken cooked red") was really yummy. Maybe we should re-invite the "visiting chef" again next year. They went home abt 11am the next day so that they could come back as "guests".

Uncle's family came abt 3 unannounced. We were like in a daze cos Sakura, me n mum were having a nap...exhausted from all the cooking and cleaning. They didn't stay very long cos they started off late and had a few more houses to visit. I'm so thankful that I don't have to do the visiting since mum is the eldest. At least I could stay home to do some revision (yeah poor me haha). Auntie came at around 4 plus..this time as "guests"..in their "proper" attire. Uncle Dolah was like totally exhausted cos the stall opened really late on Hari Raya eve (he stayed there till 6am I think). In the end, he couldn't keep his eyes open any longer so he went to take a nap.

We watched a really silly tamil movie about a person with split personalities - a "sissy", a "hero" who goes around believing he has the right to take the law into his own hands by punishing criminals himself, and a "romeo" who was a manifestation of his suppressed love for the heroine. I think we had more of a good time laughing during the movie than watching it. We came to my room, sat around and chatted till about 8 plus. After auntie left I could finally concentrate on studying but by then I was too tired. Took a short nap...but got bored awhile later..so I didn't do much. Luckily I had such sweet friends who helped me..XL lent me her notes and even went down to make a copy for me. GH took the trouble of explaining to me about multiple linear regression during lab session (cos I was too tired spring cleaning that I couldn't make it to school on wed morn) and YK printed for me her summary sheet and even emailed me her compiled notes on STATA (the stats software we're using). Thanks gals..really appreciate it!!

It's hard to throw out trash

Finally did some spring cleaning of my room today. Got rid of the cobwebs and piles of dust. And I can finally see my tabletop now. Stumbled upon some really ancient things...like a used phonecard, the old children's MRT card, my notebook from 1995...wonder why I keep these stuff sometimes.

used old phonecard: i was supposed to sell them off one day (collector's items) and make big bucks

MRT card: souvenir?

notebook: hmm..somehow i keep thinking i might need the notes that i jotted down..or perhaps someone's phone number..tho i think it's really unlikely.

well i hope i can do a more thorough job soon, after sakura's o-levels hopefully..cos the two piles (which are mostly her stuff) on my desk are beginning to annoy me. maybe then i can find even more treasure...which i have to learn to throw away. oh well, now that the room is tidy, we can celebrate hari raya haha.

Starving Artist

Got this from a friend's blog:

The Personality Defect Test

You are 28% Rational, 14% Extroverted, 42% Brutal, and 57% Arrogant.

You are the Starving Artist! You are more intuitive than logical, and are primarily guided by your heart and emotions. You are also very introverted and gentle. Of course, this does not mean that you do not have an ego. In fact, you are surprisingly arrogant for someone so emotional and gentle. This is why you are best described as a starving artist. You are very introspective and quite sure of yourself, as any accomplished artist is, yet your views are impractical, guided by feelings, and overly gentle. You probably find math, logic, and similar intellectual pursuits offensive to your artistic sensibilities, and you prefer the open-endedness of artistry because then you know you can never truly have a wrong answer. So really you have no reason to be arrogant, you big doofus, because the skills you value (emotion, spirit, art, etc.) in yourself are valuable only on a subjective level, meaning your arrogance is purely masturbatory. In short, your personality is defective because you are arrogant, introverted, introspective, gentle, and thoroughly irrational...posessing most of the traits needed to be a starving--and useless--artist. So get out there, write a few short stories that are allegories for the spirit, and starve!

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

Lessons of the day

1. We have a prof who's obsessed about apoptosis.

We had a presentation today...topics were interesting..ranging from "A cup of tea a day keeps cancer away" to "Cytokines and GI cancer: A Double-Edged Sword". And all this fellow could keep asking was.."How is this molecule related to the apoptotic pathway?" For the benefit of those who don't know..apoptosis is how cells commit suicide. What pissed us off was that even in Advanced Cell Bio (a yr 4 module), the prof kept stressing that we didn't have to know the pathways cos they can always be looked up. And here comes this guy who asked nothing other than what the pathway consists of. Grr. I was panicking at 1.45 cos I just realised I didn't bring my hardcopy of the presentation, where I wrote down a lot of stuff to say. So I just read off the slides and crapped about whatever I could remember. Oh well, I think it was pretty ok except for the stupid apoptosis qs. Went home feeling more liberated..now just one more test to worry about.

2. Apoptosis is overrated.

Sooner or later everyone's gonna blame everything on apoptosis.

3. They speak Swahili in Tanzania.

4. It's nice to feel loved. =)

I seem to hunt out the gays

First it was Stephen Gately from Boyzone. And just a few weeks ago, Sakura told me Mark Feehily from Westlife, whom I used to go ga-ga over, came out too. Ahem..interesting...

Auntie came..

A pretty rare occasion these days..heh. It was pretty fun, tho I was supposed to be doing my presentation instead of playing host. We had tandoori chicken, chicken curry, prata and banana pengat. Yum yum. After breaking fast, we were pretty bored cos there was nothing good on tv. My auntie resorted to waxing my legs for me and Jamila wanted to sing karaoke. Hope they come again some time soon :)

Feels good to be wanted

Met up with my auntie n cousin yesterday at Kaslynet's Singapore branch opening. She was angry that I haven't been calling her as much as I used to (which wasn't very often to start with heh..). I didn't have any excuses...it used to be "I don't like calling" but that didn't apply cos she's my fave aunt. Then I said I didn't like calling cos she's on shift work so I never know when's the right time (hate calling ppl at the wrong hour). Then she let my cousin use her hp for some time so I couldn't get her "directly" (forgot that land lines still exist) and now..busy with my modules. What a terrible niece I am. Inviting her over for buka today. Hope the curry I'm gonna make will be good enough for guests heh.

Mum did pretty well at the launching yesterday. She was the MC of the show. Flo almost won the lucky draw...some inattentive guy suddenly realised his number was called so since 43 was the replacement number, he got it instead. Boo. (I'm competitive, if u don't already know that..) Then number 42 was called out. Woohoo! But till now no one knows what I won (I wasn't paying attention anymore cos I was still bitter that guy got our sunglasses lol). According to auntie it's something worth $75. I hope it's a massage voucher..yummy. Anyway shall just wait for the voucher to be delivered...

We went off around 10 o'clock. The taxi queue was long and few taxis were coming in. The horrible smell (of urine??) at the place (Golden Mile) was awful. Hope Bangkok doesn't smell that way haha. We went to Al-Amin in Woodlands for supper. There was pretty good food there. We had tandoori chicken, roti john, mutton chop...and I was broke by the time the bill came. Suppers are fun..we should do it again some time soon :)

Clear is Mud

Does this happen to everyone or only me? When I'm bored at the bus stop or simply talking to myself (u do that too, don't u?), I have loads which I wanna say on my blog. But when I'm actually here, in front of my comp, like right now, I'm like "Hmm what shall I say?"

.
.
.

Ok let's pretend I've written a whole lot of stuff. Wanna sign off by saying this to my "daughter": Thanks for listening n not judging :)

Do u believe in fairies?

I do! I do! At least for yesterday heh. Sakura and I went to watch Peter Pan at the Esplanade yesterday. We went to break fast first at ljs. We were giving ourselves a time limit...eat till 7.30 so that we can reach esplanade by 7.45. In the end, we were done by 7.15 so we took a stroll to esplanade. The place was nicely decorated as always..but unfortunately our digicam is spoilt so we had to stick with our phone cams..and really tiny pics. It was the premiere show and the theatre was full. We were surprised to see so many ang-mohs there...and boy were they dressed up for the occasion. We went to the bar outside the theatre...but decided we were still full to get anything to eat. Plus we had to save our tummies for dessert later.

The show was simply awesome. It's been a longggg time since I've watched a musical (caught les miserables in london last yr). It was definitely worth every dollar...even tho Sakura kept wow-ing at the fact that i bought pretty good seats (Nth row). As always, I always become infatuated with the main character - Peter Pan (a.k.a. Michael Lin). He's simply soooo talented - acting, singing, dancing, doing acrobatic stunts...flying!!! Haha. I'm just so amazed at how a bunch of kids...hardly even 10 can perform so professionally. The lead singer was also very impressive. During the intermission we went back to the bar...had no choice but to buy a tiny bottle of apple juice which cost $4!! Oh well, living the high life. Haha. Sakura and I were tempted to enter the "private reception" some company was having...we were even ready to make up stories as to how we were part of the "marketing" department. Lol. The rest of the show was as brilliant. During the finale, Peter Pan even flew over the audience (the front part at least). I was busy looking out for his rope till I realised I should just enjoy the sight. Heh. They performed one more dance (the main theme) at the end of it all. It was extraordinary. Most of us even gave them a standing ovation till the curtains came down (ok the lights went off actually..but well..u get the drift..). It was such a feel good show, we felt like we needed another dose of it.

After the show ended, we headed straight to the booth to buy some memorabilia. We bought the programme and the soundtrack. Was broke by then but what the heck. Heh. We headed to Max Brenner later on. I realised that I promised to bring Sakura there like last Oct or something...and well..it's already a year now. Haha. But better late than never I guess :P We had chocolate fondue and milk choc suckao. Sakura was pretty excited about the whole thing and we took turns melting the choc bits for the suckao. We left the place at about 11.45pm...called for a cab since the queue was so long. It was a fun outing (understatement). And I'm glad I've found myself a kaki to go to musicals with =)

Perplexity

Going thru' a tough time now. Someone close just found out that she's probably gonna go thru one of the toughest periods of her life. And my insecurities are plaguing me like hell. I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm a tough person to be with.. Do I ask for too much? Am i demanding? I hate my insecurities. I don't want to blame my past for it, nor the ppl ard me; but I dunno what to do.

I want ppl to know the real me. Who I am. What I do. Does everyone have a wall around them? Am I a coward to hide behind this wall?

I hang on to ppl too much. And yet I wanna live life as a hermit. What a contradiction. Sigh...
